In order to identify areas of opportunity and develop a strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in its activities, Buran Energy has calculated its corporate carbon footprint for 2020.

The calculation of the corporate carbon footprint involves accounting for all emissions to the atmosphere of greenhouse gases (GHG) directly or indirectly due to the development of the company’s activities. In the case of Buran Energy, the accounting has been made for different scopes, both for those in which the company has direct control over emissions (scope 1) and for those that refer to indirect emissions (scope 2 and 3).

The calculation process has been carried out following the most recognized norms and standards such as the UNE-ISO 14064-1: 2012 standard and the GHG Protocol.

The result of the calculation shows that the total equivalent tons of CO2 resulting from our activities during 2020 was 471.71 tnCO2e, distributed as follows:

  • Scope 1 (direct GHG emissions): 137 tnCO2e
  • Scope 2 (indirect GHG emissions produced by the company): 65 tnCO2e
  • Scope 3 (indirect GHG emissions not controlled by the company): 268 tnCO2e

Likewise, an individualized calculation has been made for each of the companies that are part of the Buran Energy Group, resulting in the following table:

Putting reduction measures in place

Once the emission calculation has been carried out, a reduction plan has been developed that obeys the following guidelines:

Scope 1 reduction measures

The requirement of environmental criteria will be imposed in the rental and purchase of vehicles, favoring the choice of types of electric and hybrid vehicles, the periodic maintenance of the vehicles or the planning of routes and use of alternative transport.

Scope 2 reduction measures

The installation of photovoltaic panels in the work centers will be studied, demanding the rational use of air conditioning and equipment, also favoring the purchase of computer equipment taking into account environmental criteria.

On the other hand, the 100% renewable energy policy will continue, whereby a large part of Buran Energy’s facilities use electrical energy from renewable sources, with the certificate that ensures traceability.

Scope 3 reduction measures

In this case, alternative transport, specifically rail, will be promoted for the trips of the organization’s staff and a set of good practices for paper consumption.

In the coming years, the calculation will continue, which will give perspective on the evolution of emissions, applying the mandatory adjustments and changes to the organizational structure, and the results of the reduction strategy.
